Klonopin and Xanax are medications classified as benzodiazepines used to treat psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and panic disorders. Benzodiazepines work by enhancing the level of GABA in the brain. GABA molecules work as inhibitors to reduce nerve activity in the brain. In this way, both drugs induce effects similar to central nervous system depressants which make them some of the most commonly abused drugs. For this reason, they are not typically prescribed long term. Despite their similarities in the same medication class, both drugs have their own distinct features and indications. Klonopin, also known as clonazepam, carries a half-life in the range of 30 to 40 hours. Although drugs are dangerous on their own, the dangers involved with mixing them are even greater. Oftentimes, one substance enhances the effects of the other. When people mix drugs, they put themselves at risk of overdose, even more so than when they’re only abusing one substance at a time. It’s a prescription medication that classifies as a benzodiazepine tranquilizer, used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. Two drugs that are sometimes taken together are Klonopin and Xanax. The National Alliance on Mental Illness states that clonazepam is also used to treat seizure disorders. As a benzodiazepine tranquilizer, it affects the central nervous system, in particular the gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors in the brain. These receptors inhibit and reduce activity in the nerve cells in the brain, ultimately make them resistant to excitement. As documented by the National Institutes of Health, drugs in this classification are among the most widely prescribed group of medications, with more than 112 million prescriptions being given for them in 2007 alone. It categorizes as a benzodiazepine tranquilizer just like Klonopin does.

Even though klonopin, xanax and valium are all benzo's, do.

Its not up to you what you take, a dr has to prescribe it and he's going to prescribe what he thinks is best. So, you Kaismama might not want to speak when you know just what your doctor does. Don't judge someone until you walk a mile in their shoes, know their medical conditions and know anything about them. All Benzo's are different and all people respond differently to the same medication. They may work similarly but there is no "they are the same" if they were all the same they wouldn't bother making multiple medications all with different chemical make ups and half-lifes.. He HAS to atleast listen to what you want, and my doctor's have never denied me of anything I've asked for. She CAN tell her Dr what she thinks is best for her,but who are you to dictate her thoughts. And I'm self pay, meaning the purpose for a Dr is to sincerely help his patients. The klonopin and xanax are equal, but again, the klonopin is better for chronic anxiety. Xanax doesn't cover ANY of those symptoms so please don't listen to her. but I'm going to my Dr tomorrow and I'm asking for 2mg ativan because I believe that it's better suited for me. Today, I asked him for Klonopin because I have seizures, can't sleep and am in pain. Plain and simple & if you've been going to same Dr for say over a year, like I have, yes they WILL listen and prescribe you what you ask for, as long as its not some outlandish medicine that isn't close to what you take. So next time if someone ask a question, someone w a brain should answer. Thanks I was give Xanax and the long term use led to friends commenting on my memory loss & repeating myself. You can't say 1/2 a klonopin is 1mg of ativan, they are in the same family but different meds with different half-lifes and drug chemistry. I've told my Dr.'s what I wanted for the past 10 years and have never been denied a reasonable medication for the condition. Upon decrease I experienced high anxiety, rapid pulse, aggoraphobia and believe it or not 2 convulsions. If you have Panic Disorder, some people respond better to Clonazepam, others to Alprazolam, some people need both. Klonopin and Xanax are benzodiazepine medications that treat anxiety and panic disorders. Benzodiazepines (benzos) can be habit-forming and create physical and mental dependency when taken in large doses or for prolonged periods of time. Clonazepam, commonly known by the brand name Klonopin, is a tablet or an orally disintegrating tablet. It treats panic attacks or certain types of seizures by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Alprazolam, popularly known by the brand name Xanax, comes in the form of concentrated solutions, tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, or extended-release tablets. Individuals take Xanax to treat anxiety disorders and panic attacks by reducing abnormal excitement in the brain. Klonopin lasts longer than Xanax, so individuals would need to take less Klonopin compared to Xanax.
