Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is used to treat malaria, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Learn about side effects, warnings, dosage, and more. Plaquenil is usually used for long term disease control, rather than in the short term to control active bursts of inflammation. Plaquenil has important but uncommon side effects that may affect your eye. How does Plaquenil affect your eyes? Retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine is rare, but even if the medication is discontinued, vision loss may be irreversible and may continue to progress. It is imperative that patients and physicians are aware of and watch for this drug’s ocular side effects.

When Plaquenil works, most patients start to feel improvement after 8-12 weeks. When patients start Plaquenil, doctors usually have them try it for 3 months before they assess the patient to determine if it is working. Plaquenil is also known as a treatment for malaria, a blood-borne parasite spread by mosquitoes in many tropical and sub-tropical environments. The usual dose is between one and two tablets per day (200 to 400 mg per day).

A Disorder Of The Retina Of The Eye; Other drugs in the treatment for RA or Lupus may have more frequent or serious side effects then Hydroxychloroquine so it would be wise to consider it a viable treatment option and not easily dismiss it because of the risk of what amounts to a fairly infrequent eye issue.
